PP gowns are made from single-layer polypropylene, offering basic dust and splash protection.
SMS gowns feature three bonded layers (spunbond + meltblown + spunbond) — giving better fluid resistance, tear strength, and comfort. SMS is preferred in medical and pharmaceutical applications.
They are fluid-resistant, not fully waterproof. The meltblown middle layer repels light to moderate liquid exposure, ideal for patient care or laboratory use. For full waterproofing, choose PE-coated or laminated gowns.
Depending on fabric weight and treatment, SMS gowns meet AAMI Level 1, 2, or 3 standards:
Level 1 – Minimal risk (visitors, basic care)
Level 2 – Low risk (blood draw, lab work)
Level 3 – Moderate risk (ER, ICU, fluid exposure)
25–30 gsm: Lightweight, suitable for visitor or food industry use.
35–40 gsm: Medical and clinical applications.
45 gsm+: Higher fluid resistance for moderate-risk environments.
Elastic cuff: Basic, economical option but may leave small gaps with gloves.
Knitted cuff: Softer and more secure, improves comfort and glove fit.
Thumb loop: Offers the best seal with gloves, minimizing fluid leakage at the wrist.
